HOW IS UTP IMPROVING URBAN EDUCATORS?

Supporting Metro State UTP Students —

The UTP program offers many supporting services to teacher education students, such as:

Tutoring within Denver Public Schools: Opportunities are available for qualifying teacher education students to tutor students within one of the partnering DPS schools. UTP students gain valuable experience, paid up to 10 hours per week. Since the Spring 2008 semester, 18 students have worked within 8 of the partnering DPS schools. UTP students average a total of 186 hours working side-by-side with DPS teachers and their students. Read more...

Scholarship Opportunities: Since the Spring 2006 semester, UTP has awarded 124 scholarships totaling $104,392 to high-achieving UTP students. Scholarships were offered in the high-need program areas of math and science and to students enrolled in one of the Linguistically Diverse Education courses. Find out the requirements and how to apply for a scholarship here.

UTP Workshop Offerings: A wide variety of informative workshops designed to enhance pedagogical skills above and beyond coursework in the teacher education program are available each semester, free of charge. Topics include Classroom Management, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Linguistically Diverse Education and DPS Hiring Practices, to name a few. Workshop facilitators include DPS teachers and administrators, Metro State faculty and administrators and outside educational consultants. DPS Hires: The ultimate goal of the UTP program is to get students hired as teachers in urban schools.  Currently, there are 31 former UTP students now teaching within several DPS high-  and middle-schools.
