Admission Requirements

Are you a MSCD Student interested in teaching in an urban school?

All MSCD teacher education students who have been officially accepted (have their blue card) by the Teacher Education Department, may participate in the offerings and activities provided by the Center for Urban Education (CUE) program. Simply fill out an Interest Statement and bring it into the CUE office. Download the Interest Statement here.

How to become officially accepted into the MSCD Teacher Education Department

Students not yet accepted into the MSCD Teacher Education Department may attend a program information meeting regarding teacher licensure in early-childhood, elementary or secondary education. Find out more about the different programs and the admission requirements by visiting the Teacher Education website at www.mscd.edu/ted/gettingstarted/index.shtml. Or, visit the Teacher Application Center in West Classroom - #136.

CUE Admission Requirements

CUE candidates will apply to the program the spring before the final year of their Teacher Preparation Program. To emphasize the importance and level of demand, CUE application requirements will be higher than those now in place for MSCD Teacher Education applicants. Selected prospective teachers in early childhood, elementary and secondary education will have to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and commitment through the following:

  • 3.0 GPA in both content major (targeting district shortage areas) and required minor Teacher Education courses
  • Portfolio demonstrating participation in selected community service activities
  • Enrollment in elective courses and/or special workshops/seminars that address key needs of urban students, i.e., Linguistically Diverse Education, multicultural education, literacy, district curriculum reforms and assessments,
  • Letters of Support from leaders/teachers for whom service was conducted and who can attest to the candidate’s knowledge, skill and commitment to professional service in urban schools

CUE Program Advanatages: Students involved in the CUE program will gain a better understanding of what it takes to teach in an urban school by completing all three required field experiences and student teaching within one of the CUE affiliated urban schools. CUE students will be mentored throughout their school placements by MSCD faculty, an experienced cooperating teacher and one of the designated urban school liaisons.

CUE students may also take advantage of the following program offerings:

  • CUE Workshops/Seminars
  • Scholarships
  • Tutoring within an urban school
  • Urban after-school programs
  • Professional Development seminars provided within the K-12 schools

See Pre-Service Teachers page for more information.
